Miss Colombia as Miss Universe

Ariadna Gutierrez, Miss Colombia in the Miss Universe pageant, overcame adversity in seconds Dec. 20.

With a worldwide audience casting 10 million live votes for Miss Universe and thousands of people cheering as Gutierrez was crowned Miss Universe 2015 in Las Vegas, she had to relinquish her crown when host Steve Harvey announced he had made a mistake in reading the card in his hands. The actual winner was Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

“Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy,” Ariadna said after the event. “I’m happy for all what I did [to reach] this dream. I’m so happy. Thank you all.” She adds another thank you to everyone who voted for her.

A few days later she posted a comment on Instagram:

“Your destiny is written for you. And my destiny was this,” she writes. “I was able to bring happiness to my country after becoming Miss Universe for only a couple of minutes.” She continues with, “I also want to congratulate the Philippines for their new Miss Universe. The happiness that you must be feeling must be incredible.”

It takes a person with true character to react with the grace this woman did. She turns 22 on Christmas Day and has solidified her place as a woman who has faced adversity and had an admirable reaction in seconds.
